The History of Rickmansworth Hockey Club

The club was founded in 1911 as Rickmansworth St Marys Hockey Club by the Reverend C.A.W. Plain, Curate of St Mary the Virgin.

First matches were played in Moor Park at the bottom of Batchworth Hill on land loaned by Lord Ebury, followed by pitches in Harefield Road and, later, on land behind Our Lady Help of Christians - now a junior football pitch and only an undercut away from the present ground.

After the First World War, play moved to Money Hill and in 1924 the Rickmansworth Cricket Club invited the Hockey Club to share the present ground. Thus St Marys Hockey Club became Rickmansworth Hockey Club.

The Second World War occurred and after it in October 1946, an AGM, the first for seven ears, restarted the Club with some vigour. The Club's name appeared in the London Evening News, who complimented them on its successful summer evening games against Bromley, Outcasts, Southgate, Stags and Tulse Hill.

International honours arrived for the club with Ronnie Smith being awarded an England Cap. County "A" honours were awarded to Messrs. Molyneux, Oakley, Swerling and Yates. With increasing membership a fourth eleven was started in the 1958/59 season.

More recently the name of the club was changed to Rickmansworth and Rosarians upon the amalgamation with Rosarians - formerly Rickmansworth GS Old Boys' Club. This enabled the Club to field six elevens on a Saturday and a regular Sunday mixed side as well as the established Sunday A XI, which retained its prized list of London league club fixtures.

Soon after the amalgamation the old tennis courts between the two pitches were removed and in time a third pitch was available which at least increased the Club's bar take if not its skills in the initial years. At this stage the Club colours were changed to maroon and gold.

League hockey arrived in the Eastern Counties and many Rickmansworth members viewed its birth with dismay, although its effects were limited to the first eleven. Some years later the second eleven league was formed and a settled period has existed since this time.

A Veterans' eleven was formed in the 1980/81 season and many familiar faces were seen to star rather than hang up their boots.

1984/85 saw the creation of the Club's own ladies section which followed an unsuccessful attempt to encourage Rickmansworth Ladies to join a year earlier.

With success at the Olympics in 1988, the popularity grew and with this the club was fielding up to 6 men's teams and 4 ladies teams.
